PMC grads must sit exam for foreign qualified docs

Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake yesterday said that students who would qualify from the Malabe Private Medical College at present will have to pass the examination (E.R.M.P), which all foreign medical degree holders have to sit in order to practice here.

He said the Private Medical College has been given 18 months to correct its shortcomings and bring itself to the standard of State medical faculties and thereafter the students qualifying from PMC need not sit the ERMP.

As it is, those qualifying from this medical college would have to enroll themselves in a foreign university to qualify and if they are rejected by the Sri Lanka Medical Council it would not be a problem for them as the Attorney-General has ruled that their degree should be accepted.

The Minister made these observations in response to questions raised by the media about the position of those studying in the private medical college now.
