Jayawardenepura Uni withdraws punishment meted out to undergrads

The Sri Jayewardenepura University has cancelled the suspension of undergraduates.

According to a letter sent by Vice Chancellor Dr. N. L. A. Karunaratne to students they have been advised to maintain good discipline.

Secretary of the Students Council, Sanath Bandara told The Island that they had received the 10- page letter from the VC yesterday evening.

He said that they had performed a sathyagraha opposite the university’s main gate demanding the withdrawal of suspensions and cancellation of studentships,for more than 60 days and finally they had won their demand.

Bandara said that according to the letter issued by the Vice Chancellor 189 suspensions, 40 studentship cancellation and five cancellation of lifetime studentship had been withdrawn with effect from July 03.

"We called off our sathyagraha and celebrated the victory with a demonstration opposite the university’s main gate today noon," he said.

Bandara said that the university administration had met one of their demands, but the rest of academic and welfare problems still remained unsolved.

The Student Council would continue protests and demonstrations until other demands too to be met, Bandara added.
