GMOA calls for probe into RMOs’ ‘Russian degrees’

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday said it would call upon the Health Ministry to investigate medical degrees which a Russian university had awarded to 70 Registered Medical Officers (RMOs).

GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Upul Gunasekera, addressing the media yesterday in Colombo, alleged that those RMOs sought Sri Lanka Medical Council recognition for their degrees.

The RMOs had managed to obtain paid study leave for three years from the then Health Minister A. H. M. Fowzie claiming ir was to study medicine at St. Petersburg Medical School in Russia, Dr Gunasekera said claiming that they had not made use of that opportunity.
