One-day strike by
Uni non – academic staff tomorrow

by Dasun Edirisinghe

University non-academic staff, including administrative officers, will stage a one-day token strike tomorrow (02) demanding an immediate solution problems surrounding the rectification of their salary anomalies.

President of the Inter University Trade Union Federation (IUTUF) R. M. Chandrapala said that they decided to hold a token strike as the government was keeping silent over their agitation.

"All staff from registrars to labourers would join the strike tomorrow," he said adding they would show their strength to the government and that universities couldn’t run without their support.

University non-academics met the officials of the National Salaries and Cadre Commission (NSCC) on Sept. 29 to discuss matters relating to anomalies in their salaries, which have not been rectified since 2006.

At the meeting they had forwarded their proposals on rectifying the anomalies. Those were accepted by the NSCC, but there was no response since then even after one month, said Chandrapala.

University non-academics, including administrative officers, performed a sick-note campaign in universities countrywide on September 12 and threatened a token strike demanding that the government take urgent steps to solve the problem.

Chandrapala said that all successive governments, after 2006, had failed to honour the pledges made to non-academics and the problem had worsened now.
